Description Leif Halvard Silli 2011-12-13 00:11:05 CET
PROPOSAL: To make authors aware of the effect of the GENERATOR exception, please alert the conformance-checker user about the fact that it casues <img> elemetns to not be validated.

BACKGROUND: As predicted, the generator exception causes confusion. Example:

(1) A page was analysed w.r.t. why the <img>s were considered valid, despite the lack of @alt:
     http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-validator/2011Dec/0017

(2) After a few messages in www-validator@ and other fora,
     it suddenly dawned on us that the hand coded page in question
     contained the following META element:

      <META NAME=GENERATOR CONTENT="Hand">

     Thus the seeming validity, was the generator exception rule's fault:

     http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/www-validator/2011Dec/0023

I am sceptical about the generator exception, but as long as it is present, those who use the conformance-checker service should be informed about the effect of its presence, so as to not - on false ground - draw conclusions about the page's validity.

Please read the above like so:

   "the fact that it casues <img>elemetns to not be validated for use of @alt attribute"
