Simple schema change needed for this, and perhaps also some tweaking in the tree-building microdata checker which collects the itemtype but does nothing with it IIRC.

See also http://www.w3.org/Bugs/Public/show_bug.cgi?id=14637 in which I ask if itemtype="" is valid. I assume it isn't.
